House Warming CD-ROM

House Warming CD-ROM

Whiteboard Awards Winner 2007

CD-ROM developed from science teacher Stephen Mackay Strain’s winning entry to Sellafield Ltd’s Secondary Whiteboard Awards 2007.

House Warming has been produced for use on interactive whiteboards for students studying science at Key Stages 3 and 4.

The program records a family’s use of electricity in the home, calculates the financial cost and estimates domestic carbon dioxide emissions.

Students are presented with a variety of options for reducing energy consumption, cost and CO2 production:

Energy saving measures – adding double-glazing, loft and cavity wall insulation and using energy saving light bulbs.

Dynamic features – not leaving electrical appliances on ‘standby’, only filling kettle with required amount of water and lowering the central heating thermostat.

Family’s behaviour – using showers instead of baths, turning off lights and selecting energy efficient domestic appliances.

The program demonstrates how small changes in our daily lives can reduce cost both financial and environmental.

House Warming is a good companion to the new Environment Reporters Teaching Pack.
